|society:||oh you have your period? well you have two options.|
|society:||you can use sanitary pads, which make you feel like you are wearing a diaper, and have the added fun benefit of being extremely uncomfortable and give you the extreme paranoia that they will not be enough coverage and at any moment with any movement or sudden sneeze you'll bleed over onto your clothes and walk around all day with blood stained trousers while everyone points and laughs at you.|
|woman:||sounds awful. what's my second option.|
|society:||a penis shaped wad of cotton that you shove uncomfortably inside yourself and it catches the blood before it leaves your body.|
|woman:||still seems pretty awful.|
|society:||wait! it gets better! there's the outside chance that using those will kill you!|
|woman:||well, are they at least free? like how men can have access to free condoms? i mean, it's not like i'm choosing for this to happen.|
|society:||HAHAHA! that's funny. no, you have to pay for them. and they're really fucking expensive.|
|society:||oh, and if you tell anyone that you ARE on your period, your judgement, opinions, and reactions are going to be dismissed as the crazy ramblings of a lunatic.|
|woman:||i think i'll go with my third option.|
|society:||what third option?|
|woman:||i think i'll bleed on everything you love.|
Yes, I do believe there is indirect canon evidence of physical abuse. I base my belief primarily off the scenes in 5x16 and 7x03, when Dean remembers what John did to him and Sam describes John as a mean drunk. Look at their faces:
These faces speak to me of nothing but fear and, in Dean’s case, abject trauma. I can think of nothing to explain these expressions but violence. I can’t find any explanation for Dean’s face except that he had the shit beaten out of him. I have had a number of people who have experienced physical abuse write me to say that they recognize that expression from their own faces.
I think it’s feasible that the “werewolf” bruises on Dean’s arms in 9x07 were inflicted by John (regardless of what the writers say), but more than that I would cite the overall normalized violence between Dean and Sam. Even living a rough life, I don’t think they would so easily punch each other the way they do if they hadn’t grown up with that kind of violence.
I think what strikes me the most about this is Dean’s face. Even after all these years, his expression speaks of genuine fear and John’s been dead for a couple of years at that point. Dean looks terrified and I’m pretty sure if anyone moved to hit him in that moment he would jump back and curl up in hopes of defending himself.
That’s the facial expression of a man who has been beaten within an each of his life by someone he trusted and never thought capable of doing something like that. This actually explains the amount of physical abuse Sam and Dean take on a regular basis without flinching. In 04x09, they jump out of a window and fix themselves right up like jumping out of a second floor stained glass church window is something they do every day.
Sam literally fixes Dean’s dislocated shoulder and Dean gets up and walks away from it completely ignoring the fact his shoulder was DISLOCATED UNTIL ABOUT TWO SECONDS AGO.
If that doesn’t speak volumes about his life growing up I don’t know what does.
